There’s no point in sugar-coating it: Cosmic Sin is a cosmic mess. For one thing, the script is all over the place, with the basic set-up seemingly changing from scene to scene and a total lack of coherence in the storytelling. Drake’s direction is equally atrocious – he has no idea how to stage even the simplest elements of the film, whether it’s a shoot-out, a dramatic moment or an emotional scene. The film is doubly frustrating because it completely wastes its central premise. It’s easy enough to see what the film should have been – a bargain basement Predator knock-off with shape-shifting aliens picking off the soldiers one by one on a distant planet. Instead, almost the entire film consists of people standing around talking about what they’re going to do instead of actually doing it.
The actors are completely wasted too, to an almost hilarious degree. Top billed Frank Grillo basically disappears after the first 45 minutes, almost as if he’d walked out on the film halfway through – when he does pop up again, it’s in such a limited capacity that you strongly suspect it was all cobbled together in the edit with special effects.
Audiences are used to Bruce Willis putting in the bare minimum of effort in his direct-to-DVD releases, so his non-performance here won’t surprise anyone, but it’s an incredibly lazy piece of work even by his own extremely low standards. He doesn’t even grant the film a trademarked smirk.
In fairness, the rest of the characters are clearly defined, it’s just that there are way too many of them and the script is completely incapable of pulling off basic interaction between them. Consequently, none of the supposedly emotional moments work properly, to the point where heroic sacrifices and unexpected character deaths go by with barely a blink.
