StoryLine:

Someone is dragging Amanda (Maria Valverde) through the woods. A boy’s voice asks her questions. She answers them. And the story that follows is told in a jumble of memories, flashbacks from her current state of delirium. “I’m seeing you for the first time,” she says to the boy — she and her young daughter Nina (Guillermina Sorribes Liotta) drive over a bridge and see him in a rowboat, lazily dangling a hand in a creek. Amanda and Nina are new to this small town, staying for the summer in a country home, with plans for their husband/father to join them in the coming weeks. Amanda and Nina have barely looked around the place before their neighbor Carola (Dolores Fonzi) comes up the path with two buckets of water, a kind gesture — the drinking water here isn’t very good, she explains. Amanda and Carola become fast friends. They sit by the pool and Carola tells her story — a flashback within the flashback. The boy we’ve seen and heard previously? That’s Carola’s son, David (Emilio Vodanovich). Carola’s husband is a horse breeder. A few years ago, their valuable stallion jumped the fence. Carola scoops up little David to search for it, and finds it on the edge of the woods, dying. David wanders off and plays in a nearby puddle; his mother picks him up and nearby, we see a dead bird. David quickly becomes deathly ill with a burning fever, and Carola, not trusting the rural clinic to get a doctor to him in time, puts him in the rowboat and takes him upstream to an old woman in a green house, who performs a “transmigration” on him. I think the procedure is more voodoo than science, but it seems to have saved David’s life.
