Oru Pakka Kathai begins with a Bhagavatham discourse. Director Balaji Tharaneetharan uses this extended sequence to set up his characters. We see Meera (Megha Akash, solid as a young girl finding herself in a situation out of her control), an ordinary young girl. We are introduced to her parents, who are your typical middle-class parents. We meet Saravana aka Sara (Kalidas Jayaram, effectively capturing the genial boy-next-door quality of the character), her boyfriend. They have been dating since school, and both their parents have even agreed to marry them off once Sara clears his arrears and gets a job.
Everything seems to be fine. And then, Meera misses her period. Suddenly, there is some tension. Her mother, who initially dismisses this as normal, becomes concerned once she realises the fact that her daughter has a boyfriend. She takes her to their family doctor only to be told that the still-in-college Meera is pregnant! Sara is given this news. His parents, too, are told of this development. Both sets of parents decide to get the two youngsters married at the earliest. But here’s the catch! Meera is still a virgin!
And thus, Balaji Tharaneetharan connects us back to the beginning of the film, the Bhagavatham discourse. During this time, we have also had a scene where a cartoon depicting Lord Krishna’s birth is playing in the background. And we have also met Sethu, a school kid who believes he is an avatar of God.
