StoryLine:

Director Arisil Moorthy makes his intentions clear right in the opening scene of Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum, in which we see the protagonist Kunnimuthu (Mithun Manickam, who makes a promising debut) walk into a police station to file a complaint about his missing bulls, Karuppan and Vellayan. The writer begins to ask for details, but then, a couple of political underlings enter to complain about the MLA’s missing dog. He offers to find it at the earliest, but when the naive Kunnimuthu requests him to find his bulls, he throws his weight around and orders the poor guy to leave the station. And for a while, no one seems to be understanding the plight of Kunnimuthu and his wife Veerayi (Ramya Pandian, fine). They live in Poocheri, a village so backward in development that later in the movie, a character wonders if it is outside India. They might be poor, but so far, they have been leading a contented life, in which Vellayan and Karuppan occupy centre-stage. Where others see just a couple of bulls, they see two children. Even as Kunnimuthu, along with his friend Mannthinni (Vadivel Murugan aka YouTuber Kodangi, who lights up the first half with his quips only to be turned into background scenery in the second half), haplessly searches for the bulls, the director shows us why the animals are so dear to the couple in simple yet effective flashbacks.

But half way into the film, Kunnimuthu gets pushed to the background of his own story. After teasing us with sight gags and throwaway lines satirising contemporary politics (‘Engineering paditha parotta master thevai’ reads a board in one scene), the film turns into a full-blown, in-your-face satire when the protagonist meets Narmatha (Vani Bhojan, adequate), a TV journalist. At first, the satire feels amusing and even enjoyable in places, but you also get the distinct sense of the filmmaker being content with low-hanging fruits to make its point.
