William Tell tells us about his gambling philosophy and how he got so good at counting cards. He bets small and wins small as he prefers an anonymous existence. He tells us about his 8 year stint in a military prison but doesn’t discuss his crimes. we also learn he has an odd habit of covering his motel room furniture in sheets and wrapping them with twine. At another casino, William runs into La Linda, an acquaintance from the gambling world. She runs a stable, a group of investors who back gamblers for a portion of their winning. In Atlantic City, William happens upon a seminar on security being given by Major John Gordo. He slips into the seminar, but then decides to leave almost immediately. On the way out, a young man, Cirk, slips him a piece of paper with his name and number. After having a nightmare about a prison torture camp, William calls Cirk and two agree to meet. Cirk tells William he knows who he really is, Pfc William Tellig, a soldier who was tried and convicted for his role in the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse. Cirk explains his father was also at Abu Gharib and served time, and that he was a violent man because of his experiences. His mother left, and eventually Cirk’s father killed himself due to his trauma from the war. Cirk holds Gordo responsible and wants to capture, torture, and kill Gordo. He asks for William’s help but he refuses. William, wanting Cirk to avoid the violent life, asks Cirk to come with him while he gambles.
At their next stop, he tells La Linda that he is interested in making an arrangement. William reveals to La Linda that he wants to go on the World Series of Poker tour and win enough money to help Cirk with his debts and start a new life. He plans to play for a year max, then go back to his anonymous life. After some WSOP matches, William makes money but loses to Mr. USA, an obnoxious Ukranian player.
