 Máximo Gallardo (Eugenio Derbez) is a self-made mogul, but he’s never forgotten his humble beginnings, growing up in Acapulco, Mexico. When his nephew Hugo (Raphael Alejandro) arrives to get a “big surprise” for his birthday, Máximo decides to tell him the story of how he got to where he is. Hugo is a bit disappointed, but he’s listening; Máximo insists the story is “more valuable than money.”As a little kid in Acapulco, where Máximo hustled to help his widowed mother and sister, he’d see Don Pablo Bonilla (Damián Alcázar), a former street kid from the neighborhood, and admire how he got a job at Las Colinas, the most exclusive resort in the big resort town. Years later, in 1984, the teenage Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) was about to go to his first day at the bus depot but his buddy Memo (Fernando Carsa) tells him that Las Colinas is hiring. He’s hired as a cabana boy, but given no help by the worker he’s assigned to shadow. Discretion is the most important thing anyone working at Las Colinas should have, according to Chad (Chord Overstreet), who supervises the pool staff.When he’s asked by friends of the resort’s owner, American soap actress Diane Davies (Jessica Collins) to get them some weed, Máximo has no idea where to get any. He eventually negotiates Memo’s boss in the laundry room, who takes his father’s necklace in trade, just to see him squirm. Maybe this won’t be the dream job Máximo thought it was. A $200 tip from Diane’s friends the next day helps to ease his mind.His first couple of days also have an upside: He meets Julia (Camila Perez) a front desk clerk who takes a liking to him and gives him a copy Jane Eyre to read. One problem: She’s Chad’s girlfriend. Another problem: Chad is Diane’s son.
