This story is set in Bhopal, where Anuj and Ritu, a new girl in town, meet in a coaching centre and sparks fly between them. And so their many firsts begin, from their first kiss to their first date, each with its own unique charm. The show’s writing is very simple and relatable; for example, Anuj and Ritu’s relationship goes through many ups and downs in each episode, but they always find simple solutions to keep their relationship intact. However, none of the issues they face are so big, but at that age, it would seem like the worst disaster ever. The drama subtly contrasts the upbringings of Anuj, who hails from an orthodox family, and Ritu, who recently moved from Gurgaon and comes from a modern family. They have very different personalities as a result of their vastly different backgrounds, but they get along well with one another. This is what makes this six-episode series—with a runtime of around 25 minute per episode—so relatable and easy to connect with.
The show, produced by Guneet Monga (who recently won an Academy Award for best documentary short film for ‘The Elephant Whisperer’) and Sikhya Productions, manages to cover every nook and cranny of the small town, adding to the levity of the lead pair’s romance.
Both Ashlesha Thakur from ‘The Family Man’ and Vishesh Bansal from the popular family show ‘Yeh Meri Family’ bring the right amount of innocence to their roles as Ritu and Anuj, respectively. The little things they do together, such as eating golgappas and exploring the city, appear endearing on screen.
In a nutshell, ‘Gutar Gu’ is predictable, but this romance is definitely sweet and makes you relive the nostalgia of first love.
