StoryLine:

Kind and warm-hearted, Goni (Jang Hyuk) only hopes for a better life for his single, hard-working mother (Park Soon-chun). He first starts gambling to make money to buy her a sewing machine, and even encourages her remarriage with local photographer Dae-ho (Lee Ki-young). What Goni doesn’t know, however, is that his stepfather used to be Jirisan’s notorious swindler and that Goni’s best friend Young-min (Kim Min-jun) is actually plotting against Dae-ho. In the end, Dae-ho is killed because of Young-min, and Goni is framed. He lands in jail where he learns the ins and outs of gambling in the card game hwatu (Korean: 화투; lit. “war of flowers”). Yeong-min (Kim Min-Jun), a high school dropout, attempts to raise money to pay for his grandmother’s surgery. He ends up losing at a round of “hwatu” – an Asian card game – and crosses over to the dark side, learning the tricks of the trade from top cardshark Ah Gwi (Kim Kap-Soo). Yeong-min’s friend Go-ni, (Jang Hyuk), also partakes in card playing. They then cross paths with Madame Jeong and her apprentice Mi-na (Han Ye-Seul). Raised by a single mother, Goni has grown up to be a warm and kind person.He starts gambling, purely with the intention of using the money he earns to buy his mother a new sewing machine.When his mother finds out about his new gambling habits, she’s outraged.To divert his mother’s attention, Goni plays matchmaker and introduces his mother to Dae-ho, the neighborhood photographer, in hopes that his mother would get remarried soon.
